Tropical Green House

Tropical Green House, Experimental Farm, Ottawa

Winner of City of Ottawa Heritage Award 2015

This green house is known as the Former Palm House, designed by Lord and Burnham, and erected at the Experimental Farm in the late 1930s. The main causes of deterioration were extremely high humidity levels inside, and the failure of the rain water leader system at the exterior. As the original wood species was bald cypress the amount of actual fungal decay in the wood was minimal. Craig has advised on the conservation of wood work and the wood window systems.

The green house as it appeared prior to restoration.

At the exterior deterioration of wood work was most pronounced where the rain water leader system had failed.

Restoration is nearly complete.
