East Block
East Block, (c1860) Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario
Canada’s East block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa is the most original of the three parliamentary buildings. As part of a multi-disciplinary team addressing entire building envelope I was responsible for the condition survey and maintenance plan for wrought iron roof cresting, wood windows, stained glass windows and exterior doorways. The wrought iron cresting on this building is considered to be the finest existing example of its type in Canada.

More recent involvement was the development of a tender package for the restoration of doors, windows and wrought iron cresting within the north-west tower.
A view of the northwest tower showing temporary stabilization in place.
A recent project involved research, a condition survey and development of working drawings and specifications for the restoration of stained glass windows at the Governor General’s entrance. These windows were restored and reinstalled in the Spring of 2006. Some of these stained glass windows are amongst the oldest ever made in Canada. Consultant to Heritage Conservation Directorate, Public Works and Government Services Canada.
Another recent project involved the development of working drawings and specifications for the reproduction of the leaded quarry light windows in the upper south west tower. Because of the extreme wind loads there had been a history of window failure. Careful study of historic photographs allowed the original glazing patterns to be accurately reproduced although substantial structural reinforcement was discreetly added.
